"Firebreak Road"
Konza Prairie Biological Station, Kansas

The Konza Prairie is an 8,600 acre tract of tallgrass prairie in the Flint Hills of northeastern Kansas. The Nature Conservancy and Kansas State University own and operate the preserve as an outdoor laboratory to study prairie ecosystems. The role of fire on the prairie has been studied for four decades and burning was being conducted during my visit. This photograph shows a road which served as a barrier to separate burned and unburned areas of the prairie.
