The most dominant feature of Death Valley National Park for me is the tremendous amount of sunlight that floods the valley floor. The photo shown here was an attempt to convey this feature at one of my favorite places, Twenty Mule Team Road. The lack of plant life allows sunlight to bring soil roughness to life. I used a medium yellow filter to clear atmospheric haze a bit, darken the blue sky and strengthen shadows in the photograph. To further emphasize texture, I used a sharp f-stop on the lens and a substantial amount of lens tilt to make sure that the entire scene from foreground to distant hills was sharply focused.
