Crater Lake sits at more than 6,000 feet above sea level and peaks surrounding the lake reach elevations of nearly 9,000 feet. Crater Lake sits at more than 6,000 feet above sea level and peaks surrounding the lake reach elevations of nearly 9,000 feet. These heights help Crater Lake National Park receive more than 500 inches (44 feet) of snow annually. When I arrived in late spring, roads were clear but snow was piled high on the shoulders in many places. This photo shows a ten foot tall wall of snow on the shoulder of the road. Sun had melted the wall surface to produce a nice mosaic pattern. The dark rocks in the foreground provide a good contrast with the brilliant white snow.
